Many People use the “R-Word” out of ignorance. They have heard people use this term as referring to Someone as “stupid,” or “Lame.” Other’s know what it means, but out of hatred, and lack of self esteem, they choose to use this word to hurt others. The word “Retarded,” does not mean stupid. It doesn’t mean lame. “Retarded,” or “Mental Retardation,” is a developmental disability. Some of these adults, and children you are calling “Retarded,” have endured more pain than you have or will ever endure. Some of them cannot talk or walk. Some of them will never see, or hear. Some of them cannot go outside and enjoy a beautiful day due to whatever diagnosis they may carry. Whether it be Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Autism, etc Etc, etc, etc., they all have their own battles daily. Whether it be tying a shoe, reading, eating, or rather… Breathing. You never know what someone may be going through.
My sister, Olivia David, is 14 years old. When she was younger, she could say about 60 words, and could walk. She could run. She had a terrible seizure one day, and lost it all. My momma prayed for her to be able to say momma, and after she woke up from another seizure, she said momma? All she can say is momma. She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at about 1-2 years old, and throughout her life, we have found out she has Autistic Characteristics, Mitochondria Disease, dysautonomia, and many other diagnosis. Years ago, she had a pace maker put in, in the healing process, she turned her arm, and the lead came out along with a chunk of her heart. She had to have the surgery all over again. Almost 4 years ago she developed Pancreatitis, and she almost died. God saved her, and gave her back to us, not just that time, but times before, when she had flat lined. Due to pancreatitis, and how much of the pancreas they had to remove, she now has type 1 diabetes. My sister has respiratory problems. She has O2 as needed. She has swallowing problems. She must be watched closely when she eats or she could choke, aspirate, and end up in hospital. My little sister is a warrior. She’s a fighter. She can barely go outside because of weather changes, that her body cannot handle. She has an Auto immune disease. She doesn’t need to be called retarded. She has enough to deal with. She is a loving and beautiful child Of God, and doesn’t need to be picked on. They go through enough. Please before you can someone retarded, put yourself in thier shoes. God has gotten us through so much. He’s been so good to us. Thank God for his love and mercy. I don’t know what we’d do without him. Please spread the word the end the word. #spreadthewordtoendtheword
